Dexter hasn't really been himself since we lost our beloved Goldie a couple of months ago. He loved Goldie -- she was really his best pal, and the dog he snuggled with most of the time (though sometimes not to his liking!). He seemed to spend the first few weeks looking for her, and was just out of sorts.
But then Alayne noticed the other evening that Dexter had cozied up to blind Madison, and was propping his head up on her as he napped:
Madison's not really a "best pal" in the way Goldie was, but it was still heartening to see him finding some comfort in resting with -- and on -- another of our old girls.

For Meghan, I, too, have lost 2 dogs (1 yr ago, then 5 months ago). I have so much yearning for them that I have started volunteering and it helps a bit to see the shelter dogs enjoy all the love that can be spoken through touch. On our walks outside the shelter I give chest rubs and massages if they tell me it is ok. They put up with so much discomfort that I feel grateful I can give them a bit of what my dogs had. Touch is healing both ways.

So glad to see Madison and Dexter enjoying some snuggle time together, I remember Madison fondly from when she was at the Meridian Valley Humane Society here in Meridian Idaho :)

What sweet pictures. I know that Dexter will always miss his Goldie but I'm glad that he has found a new friend in Madison. Nothing like a good snuggle buddy!

Oh Meghan, how awful to endure the sorrow of losing two fur friends so close together. Please don't think your life is nothing; it worried me to read that you feel that way. When you are ready, many animals are waiting for the love you clearly have to give. I bet your dogs would want for you to be happy. :-)

Aah Dexter. I'm so sorry you don't have Glodie with you anymore, as do we, but Madison makes a good substitute!!

Dexter's singing, "Well, if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with!"

I'm sorry Dexter is having such a time with his loss. Does he ever seem to hold you responsible for taking his Goldie away? I hope his little heart and yours heals soon. Bless.

Don't know how you two deal with losing so many good friends. My life is nothing right now, since I've lost my 2 dogs within 2 months of the other. I know it was the right thing to do but it doesn't seem to make me feel better at the moment. Maybe I can gain strength from thinking about how many you have helped and loved over the years.

I am so sorry about Goldie.

Madison is so sweet to let Dexter receive some comfort from sleeping on her. Maybe it's the maternal instinct in her coming forth. Or maybe she enjoys the closeness herself.

That is so precious. I just want to cuddle Dexter, and oh, kiss Madison's face! Look at that face!

It's so easy to forget that they have to deal with the loss just like we do and what is sadder to me is that we can't explain to them what is happening. Poor little Dexter, I'm happy he is finding some comfort.

Love the little D-Man! Sad to hear he was so glum as of late. Hopefully he and Madison can continue their tentative, but darling, relationship.

Bless his little heart. I know Dexter isn't the only one missing sweet Goldie. When they are gone they leave holes in the heart that take time to heal. Again, I am so sorry for your loss of Goldie the squeekie loving, box opening litte cutie. I hope Madison cuts Dex a little slack and lets him snuggle more.
