Alayne got this photo of our recent arrival, blind Lucy, hanging out with some of her new friends last week. That's blind and deaf Katie closest to the camera, her brother Spencer next to her (of course), and blind Austin the Beagle. Lucy at first was very timid around other dogs, but as I predicted in that blog post about her arriving, it was only a few days before she joined in the canine festivities.
Two days after Alayne took that photo above, I saw Lucy parading around the dog yard with a way-too-big-for-a-Dachshund Kong toy. I still don't know how she managed to get her mouth around it, but she did. By the time I came back with the camera, she had settled down to chew on it:
That's blind Willie on the left. Lucy is in front of one of the big dog houses we brought with us from Montana. The back of it -- right behind Lucy -- has sliding wooden doors that we can keep open on warm, sunny days so they get a nice breeze through them. When the weather turns brisk, we can close those doors. We try to keep dog beds inside them, but as you can see, usually they get pulled out. In this case, Lucy was clearly enjoying lying on a bed in the sunshine, chewing on her oversized Kong!

When things start to get a bit too much to deal with in this world, a quick trip to the blogs of Rolling Dog will put the world back in its proper perspective. Only then will one see how things are meant to be.

That photo of Lucy and her friends should be the official photo of RDR. Or at least used when a naysayer says it's "cruel to keep handicapped dogs alive". Just send them that photo with the caption, "Cruelty". That'll shut em up! Glad you're back! It was a long week for us, but probably a short one for you. :)

Nice shot of happy-looking, relaxed dogs basking in the sunshine - and Lucy's coat is so beautiful - can see it clearly with the contrast to the other lighter dogs - who are also beautiful.

Do you know how much you are missed?!?! So glad Lucy is getting comfy - great pics of the pups! :)

Blind Lucy is breath-takingly beautiful and resourceful. A large Kong is merely a game challenge for a dachshund! You all should know that by now!!!

Great photos, as always! Hope you enjoyed your blog-free week...but not so much that you decide to give it up.

What a wonderful little group of contented friends. Alayne, that is the most beautiful picture of Lucy and her new friends. Speaks to how well she is doing in a new environment, and how calm and content her friends are with life too. What I wouldn't give to pull up a chair of my own and join them just 'watching' the world go by.

All that pretty green grass, Kuranda cot, West Paw dog beds and their own toys, dog house, and great friends... looks like heaven to me.

What a great picture!
Just like the rest of us during a get together. I wonder what they were talking about?

Love those dachshunds!
Have you ever had a problem with separation anxiety after adopting / rescuing one of your dogs? I know it's more common among shelter dogs. Or, are they just so involved with all their buddies that it never becomes an issue?
Thanks

It's nice to see that Lucy is getting comfortable with everyone. That photo with the three little dogs on one bed is so cute. It's simply amazing how the dogs can find the beds and the toys with no help. Hope you got to relax a little with your time off from blogging.

It's good to see that Lucy has made friends with her companions at the RDR and is kicking back to relax with them. It's funny how some dogs gravitate toward the really tough toys that you expect only the largest dogs to want and vice versa. I've seen that happen before. The dog houses with the sliding doors are very smart!
Wishing all a beautiful week of good health.
Big hugs all around,
ginger, Tobias & Tlingit

What a lovely way to start up your blog again!
Lucy looks so comfortable with her new friends and so confident with her giant bong.
How quickly she settled in to start enjoying her RDR days. We are so happy for you Lucy!
