Three Blind Girls

Lena_nikki_destinyWe were out shooting photos for the fall newsletter this afternoon when this wonderful scene suddenly appeared.  Here are three of our blind girls, enjoying a late summer 'pasture party.'

On the left is little Destiny, a blind foal who was born in April this year in South Carolina.  (Destiny will be in the fall newsletter.)  In the middle is Lena, a blind Quarter Horse mare who was our very first sanctuary resident.  Lena, now 12 years old, is from Montana.  She is also ... I'm sure I've said this before ... the prettiest horse in the universe.  On the right is Nikki, a blind yearling who came to us from New Jersey.  When Nikki arrived last year she was a little 4-month foal.  Like Destiny, she had been born blind.  Now she's blossomed into this gorgeous young lady who is as smart as she is pretty.

One of the many myths about blind horses is that these animals can't go out on pasture.  As you can see, that myth -- like all the others about blind horses -- is simply not true.  In fact, almost all of our 18 blind horses enjoy grazing on pasture.  The only ones who don't get put on pasture have medical or dietary issues.
